Gilliland lives and works in Paris. He first travelled to there with Professor Wojciech Lesnikowski in 2000. Following an internship through the KU program at Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Nicholas remained to work in Paris and in Europe for the following decade. In 2011, he began working with Prof. Lesniskowki in support of the Paris program, eventually forming the architecture firm Tolila+Gilliland with partner Gaston Tolila.
Gaston Tolila and Nicholas Gilliland began working together in 2003 on a humanitarian architecture competition for which they were laureates. The nomadic dispensary project was exhibited at the Pompidou Center in Paris in 2005. Since, they have continued to collaborate on architecture, urbanism and design projects, using their knowledge of public and private work acquired in various international architecture offices. In 2012, their work received the “Prix d’Architecture du Moniteur 2012 pour la première oeuvre”. (French National prize for the first built work) for the artist workshops and housing titled “Mosquito Coast Factory”.
Today, the atelier develops a broad range of architecture programs (housing, public works, offices, cinemas...) with a particular attention to integration of each project into its own historic, geographic and environmental context.
