May 18, 2014 marked the graduation of 224 students from the School of Architecture, Design & Planning. A recognition ceremony was held for them at the Lied Center May 16, where after entering the auditorium to "The March of the Hebrew Slaves," from Verdi's opera Nabucco, the soon to be alumni were honored. University Marshall Professor Stephen Grabow read the names of each graduate who crossed the stage, and those who earned Master’s and PhD degrees were hooded by Department Chairs AndreaHerstowski, Paola Sanguinetti, and Stacey White.
In his closing remarks Dean John Gaunt said, “We wish you great opportunities, challenges and aspirations. We wish you careers and challenges, challenges worthy of your knowledge and your talents and aspirations and fulfillment, filled with the best this life has to offer.
“Most importantly do those things that defy measurement, essential values that can’t be measured. Be amazing. Be confident, be courageous, and challenge banality wherever you find it. Reinvent, create value, be resilient, live well and long, and laugh well.
"Live by conviction, and not by 'data.'
"Shine. Shine in what you do, shine in how you feel. Shine in human terms and professional terms.
And for your recessional walk from here, here is a valediction from an old Canadian rock-and-roll trouper: 'Long may you run. With your chrome heart shining in the sun, long may you run; hail and farewell.'"
And, as Neil Young's "Long May You Run" played, the the-soon-to graduate filed out of the Lied.
